Optimizing in-situ product removal operation in a bioreactor for different production scenarios

Mathematical models and optimization problems can be a valuable tool to optimize the operational design of bioreactors. In present contribution bioreactor model, implementing in-situ product removal (ISPR) is presented used demonstrate potential real world strategies that applied system. Different objectives are formulated in order find (i.e. designs) maximize yield and/or productivity. The decision variables reflect when feeding pulses should introduced, how much added extraction cycles take place. first problem focuses on maximizing system by means single objective optimization. This solution most robust easiest implement with no requirements for online measurements or control systems. focusing productivity requires solving stochastic ensure robustness solution, as trying was seen very sensitive model uncertainty. Despite proposed strategy measurements, monitoring propionate, advised. Because both important performance indexes, multi-objective consider an acceptable at same time. results set solutions representing compromises among objectives. However, these certainly require systems them correctly.
